for their first solo show, multidisciplinary artist, chiemeka offor, wanted to present their latest series nwanne m nwaanyi — a gentle meditation on black hairstyling as a love language. meaning “sister” in our mother tongue, igbo, nwaane m nwaanyi is a tapestry of the intimate moments of hair care that bond black womxn across generations and oceans. from the artist’s ancestral village in imo state, nigeria to paris, new york and los angeles, offor captures the tenderness of black femmes in a world that expects only our resilience.
chiemeka brought me on to do spatial design which involved image placement and co-curation of the frames. inspired by the richness of the imagery, i emphasized the dynamism of the works by playing with depth. the images hang from various heights and distances from the wall with braids as their strings. frames are accented by traditional and recycled textiles, wood, and dreamy hues of blue.
the show was highlighted by the cut.
